After winning his third Mutua Madrid Open on Sunday, the Spanish player spoke to the tournament’s official media in an exclusive interview about a magnificent week at the Caja Mágica.
Spanish player Rafael Nadal recaptured the Mutua Madrid Open at the Caja Mágica by defeating the Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka in the final, in doing so he takes his third title at the tournament, which makes him the most decorated player in Madrid together with another Swiss player, Roger Federer. Minutes after receiving the trophy, in an exclusive interview, the Spanish player spoke to the tournament’s official radio station and website about an incredible week.
Rafa this is your third title Madrid, what goes through your head when you win a trophy at home?
Any victory is always very special, there is no doubt about that, but in some way they are more special when you are able to achieve them in front of people who you know, people you know are behind you, and the spectators have played an important role in these matches and throughout these days, for me it is a true honour to play in front of them and they give me experiences are difficult to find anywhere else in the world, so all I can do is thank them.
Does this title have a special significance after everything that has happened in recent months?
At the end of the day when someone has recently been through something complicated every victory means so much, and obviously today is very special.
How would you evaluate the tournament in general?
Evidently it is a very special tournament, and in addition the tournament itself is now good in every sense. It has state-of-the-art facilities, without any doubt among the best in the world, and the thing which was perhaps the only outstanding issue was the courts, to improve the condition of the courts and this year the standard of the courts has been on a par with everything else. It is the only thing the tournament was missing, having perfect courts like in Monte Carlo, at Roland Garros and at any other tournament on clay and this is very important for the players and we are very grateful for it. So thank you very much to the entire organisation for the large investment it has made into making sure the courts are of the highest standard.
If a few months ago when you withdrew from the Australian Open, they told you that you were going to win five tournaments and get to two other finals, what would you have said?
Well, obviously I would have said that it was impossible, but here I am a few months later and luckily are getting infinitely better than what anyone from my team would have dreamt. I am really grateful for those that are helping me to have the chance to compete in what makes me very happy.
When you bit the trophy, it was it different to the one you bit in 2010, Were you scared when you went to bite it given its shape?
I couldn’t really bite it well. It was a little difficult, but the most important thing is that I was able to bite a trophy, a very special, here in Madrid, in front of my people here in Madrid. Also, it has been an unforgettable week for me, so thanks a lot to everyone that has made the event possible and to those that have come to the event to support me in the Caja Mágica, and those that have done this from their homes. It has been a really special week, which in part without doubt it thanks to the public.
